Personal Experience: A Key Competency for Guides

One of the most important competencies in your development as a psychedelic guide is personal experience. The depth and breadth of your own transformative journeys with various medicines play a critical role in shaping your ability to support others. The more meaningful experiences you have, the more prepared you’ll be to navigate the complexities of this work. For example, I have participated in nearly 100 guided ceremonies over the past decade, and these experiences have informed my practice far more than any single training could.

Due to the legal landscape, most programs cannot provide hands-on experience within the country. However, some programs include one or two ceremony experiences, often held outside the U.S. In Oregon, where psilocybin services are now legal, some programs offer hands-on experiences with personal journeys and opportunities to work with clients. These immersive opportunities are invaluable for building the skills, confidence, and understanding necessary to support others effectively.

In addition to formal training programs, finding a mentor can be invaluable.
